Impressive on multiple counts, the most immediate feature of this chalice or goblet is its commanding size.

It stands 8 1/8" tall, has a top diameter of 3 7/8", sits on a 4" wide foot, and weighs 12.7 T. oz.

Made by Gorham, it is stamped on the underside with the company's "lion, anchor, G" emblem, "Sterling," model number "935," and date letter "O" for 1882.

A presentation piece, it is a study in decorative embellishment...

A choice period piece dating from the third quarter of the 19th century, this item is marked "English Sterling," along with model number "404."

Although without any other identifier, "English Sterling" was a short-lived term generally only used by makers John Wendt and William Gale, both New York City, and often appears on pieces retailed by Ball, Black & Co., also New York City.

A solid silver master salt dish, this is cauldron shaped, with a bowl that measures 2 1/8" across...

Marked with the "plumed helmet over S in a shield" emblem introduced by Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. in 1895 and continued by International after SHM merged into that amalgamation in 1898, this piece dates from the 1895-98 period or shortly thereafter.

It is also marked "Sterling" and model number "C1342."

A medium-to-large sized gravy or sauce boat, it measures 6 1/2" from handle end to tip of spout, is 3 7/8" wide, and stands 4" tall at the highest...

Measuring 6" by 3 3/4" and weighing a substantial 2.7 T. oz., this flat-bottomed dresser or pin tray is encircled by a 1" wide, 3/8" high, raised border with an applied rim.

The rim is acid etched in an elegant design of scrolling acanthus leaves with floral compliments.

An estate piece long held in one family, this chamber stick is a significant example of its form. It is stamped for London, 1801-2, sterling, and Robert Sharp, who is identified in Jackson's Hallmarks as an "important maker." Grimwade's London's Goldsmiths affords him a lengthy biographical entry.
