One of Whiting's earliest patterns, "Armor" was patented in 1871, as stamped on the reverse of this 5 7/8" long, .6 T. oz., sugar spoon.

Other marks include the company's "lion and W" logo, "Sterling," and the name of the retailer, "Geo. W. Biggs," Pittsburgh, 1868-1903.

This has a shell bowl that is finished in a bright gold wash front and back sides.

Never monogrammed, this is without polishing wear, has a flawless bowl save for a surface scuff on the back side, and shows a bright... Click for details

Stamped with the "star, lion, D" pseudo hallmark of maker John L. Westervelt of Newburgh, New York, and the name "Andrew Dunn" of Fort Plain, New York, this master butter knife measures 7 1/2" long and weighs a substantial 1.4 T. oz.

The pattern is "Cone," dating circa 1860, and features ivy and other leaves, along with anthemion and bellflower detail set on a shaped handle, all of which is suggestive of the Greek Revival design mode of the period.

Measuring 5 7/8" long each, and weighing 4.8 T. oz. the set, these six matching teaspoons are all marked with Gorham's "lion, anchor, G" emblem and the word "Sterling."

The pattern is "Fontainebleau," which features figures from the court of French King Francis I. Designed by Antoine Heller in 1882, it reflects an expressive Beaux Art aesthetic.

Issued in 1932, Towle's "King Richard" pattern has enjoyed nearly a century of popularity.

A then contemporary interpretation of an English Court design, it incorporates acanthus leaves, scrolling, rosettes and a central beaded oval.

This example is an 8" long, heavy at just over 3.0 T. oz., cold meat fork.

It has four tines arranged in two splayed pairs, each of which is joined by a crossbar.

Measuring 5 1/2" long and weighing just over .6 T. oz., this item has a 1 5/8" diameter, flat-bottomed, bowl with scalloped sides.

An unusual form, it is likely a cream ladle.

The pattern is "Angelo," which is a Renaissance Revival design patented in 1878, as indicated on the reverse. Other marks are "WwH" and "Sterling."

This is engraved "MEP" over "'90" in fancy, feathered script lettering on the handle backside.

An image with roots deep in the history of theater, the harlequin figure has had many evolutionary manifestations.

This representation, a pair of 4 1/2" long, heavy at approximately 1.6 T. oz., tongs was made by Gorham, whose "lion, anchor, G" emblem and "Sterling" are impressed on the inside of one grip. These are illustrated in the company catalogue of 1888 (see above image 2) in a list identified as "sugar, olive, and bon-bon tongs."

Weighty at nearly 1.1 T. oz., this spoon measures 5 7/8" long.

Made by Wallace, whose "R W & S with deer head" emblem, "Sterling," and "Pat. 1902" appear on the backside, the pattern is "Irian."

A highly expressive Art Nouveau design, the handle features a semi-nude female surrounded by three cherubs, one with a drawn bow and arrow, a second with just an arrow. The lower portion of the handle portrays a cascade of flowers dominated by an iris, all set in high relief.

Issued in 1905, Watson's "Dorchester" is a shell and bead pattern that reflects the emerging colonial revival design trend of the period.

This example is a delicately scaled, 4 1/2" long, approximately .4 T. oz., bon bon or nut scoop with a decorative, reticulated, bowl with "Louis XV" detailing on the shoulders (see enlargement 2).

The handle backside is plain, save for Watson's Mechanics Division "H in a pennant" emblem and the word "Sterling."

As might be surmised from the name, Gorham's 1871 "Corinthian" pattern is a Greek Revival design.

It incorporates an anthemion along with other elements that tend toward the Moorish, all set on the end of a tubular handle.

This example is a 5 1/4" long, approximately .5 T. oz., mustard ladle.

Fully original, i.e. not "made up" from another piece, it has a round bowl with pointed tip, notched shoulders, and a central vee in the base. This is finished with a (partly rubbed) gold wash.... Click for details

Daniel Low of Salem, Massachusetts marketed two "witch" themed lines of souvenir silver items, one made by Durgin and one by Gorham respectively, that are legendary among collectors.

This 5 3/8" long, .6 T. oz., spoon is also a Salem souvenir piece, but marked "Inman" for the J.T. Inman & Co., of Attleboro, Massachusetts, with a history that traces to at least 1896 (Rainwater, Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers).

A prominent Hudson River Valley silver manufacturer operating from the 1840s to the 1880s, John L. Westervelt of Newburgh introduced the "Ivy" pattern that appears on this 8 1/8" long, approximately 1.4 T. oz., jelly cake server in about 1870.

The pattern is double die struck, meaning it appears on both sides of the slightly upturned handle, which in this instance is engraved "Julia" in leaf script lettering on the front.
