Rare Pair Philadelphia Spoons w/Mark of Joseph Anthony & Son c1810-14

Offered is a very rare example of the output of the partnership of noted Philadelphia silversmith Joseph Anthony and his son Michael. This partnership was short-lived, lasting only from 1810-14. The two spoons here were used for the book "Philadelphia Silversmiths" despite the rubbing of the marks, due to the extreme rarity of the mark of this partnership. The spoons are each also marked with the manufacturer's mark of Thomas Harper (working circa 1811-17), who also made silver for (Jean)... Click for details

Although the maker's mark is partly rubbed on this spoon, the part that is visible matches one of Nathaniel Coleman's known marks. Offered is a fine and scarce rural Virginia coin silver master salt spoon bearing the maker's mark E.WILTSE for either Edmund Wiltse (working in Farmville, VA circa 1826-48) or his son Edward (working in Farmville circa 1847-99). I suspect this to be the work of the father, as this spoon has no manufacturer's marks (most of the later pieces do) and by style probably dates to the 1835-45 timeframe. However, there is no way to be sure. This piece measures about 3 3/4 inches in length and weighs... Click for details
