Offered is an interesting, fairly late American silver master salt spoon by noted Philadelphia silversmith Joseph Lownes (1758-1820). This piece has a period engraved script monogram and is a standard circa 1810-20 fiddle pattern piece. The interesting part about this salt spoon is that it exhibits the remains of die-struck decoration to the bowl - something not often seen with salt spoons. This may have been a bird or some other device - one would have to take a look at what remains visible... Click for details

Lincoln & Foss, Boston, Large Sterling Silver (Chicken) Tongs
Silver : Sterling : Flatware

Old Friends
3406f   $265.00

Measuring 7 7/8" long and weighing just over 3.2 T. oz., this pair of tongs are large enough in relative terms to be described as immense. They may be an old implement that is sometimes referenced as (fried) chicken tongs.

They are stamped "Lincoln & Foss" for the mid 19th century (1848-57) Boston firm, and quite unusual for the date, "Sterling," rather than the expected coin silver.

The scroll pattern that appears on each leg is one that was probably produced by Farrington & Hunnewell,... Click for details

length 8 1/2 inches, weight 2.55 Troy ounces, monogrammed as shown, fine condition.

Other pages on this internet show a scrawny 5 1/2 inch item which they're trying to pawn off as the nut spoon. We beg to differ. And if you'll allow me to indulge myself in some shameless salesmanship, I will state that pierced servers are eminently useful, and the pointed antique patterns fit in well with any others.

Often referred to as "snuff spoons," they may also have been intended for use in children's play. We'll stay safe and simply call them miniature.

Dating from the 1850s, and measuring 8 7/8" long and weighing approximately 1.9 T. oz., this coin silver berry or other serving spoon is stamped "P.L.K." for the Philadelphia silversmith Peter L. Krider.

Relatively plain in design, it nonetheless bespeaks its origins.

The "Reverse Tipt" handle is extensively engraved on the front in a design that is evocative of Philadelphia work of the period. It incorporates leafy elements, wriggle work, bright cutting, and fine line hatching that... Click for details
